It's one of the first new assault weapons that was designed to utilize multiple calibers with minimal adjustments. It boasts no loss of zero from barrel removal and replacement, requires only the exchange of the barrel and bolt to swapcalibers between 5.56 Nato, 6.8 SPC and the ever common AK-47 round, the 7.62x39mm. It accepts AR-15, M16 and AK-47 magazines. It is designed with ambidextrous safety switch and bolt release and a nonreciprocating charging handle that has been placed on the left side of the weapon for left hand operation leaving the trigger hand in place and the rifle ready for engagement during charging and more important, immediately after.

The Robinson XCR Rifle comes highly customizable from the factory with a host of features you can choose from at time of ordering, or in our case, a host of after market AR parts that can used in conjunction with this system. Our unit had a folding stock attachment from the factory which
was impressively solid when locked into position. We had our choice of buttstocks for our XCR Rifle as it was equipped with an M16 mill spec threaded receiver. The XCR functions via a gas operated piston making it highly reliable and easy to clean. The gas block provides five positions of adjustment for suppressed shooting and various projectile weights.

Everything on the Robinson XCR Rifle can be disassembled by hand except the barrel which requires an allen wrench to remove. Take down and re-assembly are fast and easy. The XCR Rifle has absolutely no problem printing sub MOA groups. It comes standard with picatinny rails at 12,3,6 and 9 O'clock. It's factory trigger has never been touched but has won the praise of a few multi-tour experts I happen to know. The XCR comes at a price that is well below what it would cost to make any AR-15 comparable and has the same limitless possibility of customization once the adoption has gone through. The XCR is a great weapon system very worthy of comparative challenge!

The XCR Rifle does not have the magazine release on the left side of the rifle, but does have an ambidextrous bolt release. The standard ARs do not have ambidextrous controls. However, for only $30 you can purchase the Magpul B.A.D. (Battery Assist Device), which will give you the
ability to send the bolt forward from your trigger well. I have this on my m4 and it is awesome. This device allows you to make your magazine change, and get your support hand on your broomstick or hand guards rather than smack the side of you rifle. Also, your time on target is much faster. If your muzzle is up and you smack the bolt release (on the left side of your weapon) chances are you took your weapon off your target. The B.A.D. alleviates that entirely. Install time for the product is literally one minute. If you can’t install this yourself, you definitely should not own a firearm. I highly recommend this accessory to all AR owners and competitive shooters.

Also, the ACR’s charging handle is not in the back of the weapon like the AR. It is just in front of the receiver below the top of the hand guard. If you were to have a malfunction the ACR allows you to keep your muzzle up, re-rack the weapon, and re-engage your targets. Over the years, the AR has been an amazing platform but the AR’s charging handle is at the back, forcing the shooter to take his support hand away from the front of the weapon, drop the rifle down, then re-rack. After the re-rack, you have to completely reacquire your target. The XCR is also better
than the AR in that respect as well because the charging handle is on the side of the weapon.

The Robinson XCR Rifle has several different adjustments for its gas system; which is nice when using different loads. While shooting we had some problems with extraction. I took it apart and cleaned it, and then Jarem took it to the range to see if it had any more malfunctions and it worked flawlessly. I believe the reason we had issues with it at all, is because we had it on the wrong gas setting. Honestly, none of us at the range have a ton of experience with the XCR, so it took a cleaning and a chance for me to look at the gas system of the XCR to get the weapon dialed.
Honestly, none of us at the range have a ton of experience with the XCR, so it took a cleaning and a chance for me to look at the gas system of the XCR to get the weapon dialed. The ACR has an extremely easy to use gas system. At the front of the gas block you can turn the dial to: U (unsuppressed) or S (suppressed).
Rock River's reputation for producing a high quality AR-15 Rifle is absolutely solid. This was Garrett's personal AR-15 Rifle, and he had it set up to his liking. It has a 16" barrel and a Trijicon ACOG for a sighting system. The other significant aspect of this AR was the addition of a JP trigger assembly. The JP trigger lightens the trigger pull, and it was absolutely glass-like in its release. The rifle also had a Fab Defense broomstick bipod up front, and a UBR collapsable stock. Garrett had installed an Ergo grip to the pistol grip. I liked it. It is a little more hand-filling and gives the shooter a very positive grip.

The AR-15 Rifle platform has been around now for about 50 years. The fully automatic Colts have been the primary battle rifle of the U.S. military since the 1960s. They have made their way into the arsenals of police SWAT teams nationwide, and, increasingly, they are being carried in the patrol cars of line police officers. And, over the years, they have been improved to give better reliability and overall performance. And, as I write this review, and as you read it, there are thousands of U.S. troops in faraway lands fighting our nation's battles with this weapon. You just can't help but to acknowledge the comfort level that goes with shooting this rifle. It is familiar to us with respect to its layout and operation, and it has a long track record.
No surprise then that the Rock River delivered as expected. It was reliable in operation and accurate. Using the 4X Trijicon ACOG, I was able to print 1-inch groups at 100 yards using PMC full metal jacket ammo. A Rock River AR-15 is not the cheapest AR on the market. Nor is it the most expensive. But this is a quality rifle, and you get what you pay for.
My shooting career began in earnest on KD-range 5 of Camp Pendleton, CA, with the M16A2. Ever since then, my first choice in assault rifles has been a variation of the M16, whether it be an A4, or an M4. Other military rifles such as the SA-80 or galeil offer some interesting features, but don’t hold a flame to the overall design of the modern M4. In the civilian world, the Bushmaster AR-15, and M4 have so many variations that some of them are completely unrecognizable from Colt’s original design until the bolt is locked to the rear. Most design modifications for the AR-15/M4 platform are relatively minor, and carry large, sometimes ridiculous, price tags. When it comes to military application, these price tags become major issues, because, let’s face it, who’s going to win a firefight- one Marine/soldier with a decked out, highspeed/ low-drag M4, or four Marines with decent M4s that cost collectively what the single customized rifle cost?
It is a gas piston, air-cooled shoulder fired, magazinefed Firearm, that is Semi-Automatic in operation (i.e., a single round will fire each time the trigger is pulled). The ACR Barrels are cold hammer forged and hold the tightest tolerance allowed. They are rifled with either a 1 turn in 7” for heavier grain weight bullets or 1 turn in 9” for lighter bullets with a right hand twist 6 lands and grooves.

Like the Bushmaster ACR Rifle, this rifle is designed to be flexible. It is designed so that the shooter can change barrels from one length to another or to change the gun from one caliber to another. It can be configured to shoot .223, 6.8mm SPC, or 7.62 x 39 mm rounds. An allen wrench is used to release the barrel. Barrel lengths range from 11" to 18.6". The one we tested had a 16" barrel. The trigger has just a little slack in it before it reaches the pressure wall. With smooth gradual pressure, it releases cleanly. The controls are all ambidextrous except for the charging handle and the mag release.

It really isn't relevant to compare an AR-15 with the ACR Rifle and the XCR. The AR-15's basic platform was conceived of a long time ago. Since then it's been tweaked and improved, but it is still that same basic platform. Is that bad? Absolutely not. For any purpose you have, from defense to varmint shooting, this rifle can still do the job. It has admirably withstood the test of
time, on foreign battlefields and at home, and I suspect it will be relevant for a long time to come. The Rock River AR-15 we tested performed flawlessly, and it's a great value.

The Bushmaster ACR is an expensive rifle, but it looks to be worth it. The people who
engineered the layout of this rifle did a magnificent job, in my opinion. And the XCR is going to find a slightly different niche, I believe. This rifle gave me a certain feeling that I couldn't quite put my finger on, even after handling it and shooting it.... that is, until I went to Robinson's website and did a little reading. Quoting from the website, "The XCR's "Kalashnikov Theory" operating system uses a super reliable piston driven, heavy-duty, three-lug bolt which incorporates a heavy duty extractor and a fixed ejector".

That was it. Like a Kalashnikov, this rifle is businesslike and flexible. The design of this rifle
seems to emphasize ruggedness and flexibility, and de-emphasizes ergonomics and space-age materials. This is not a knock on the rifle and should not be taken that way, as it is not intended that way. This is a modern rifle, unlike the Kalashnikov. And we got much better accuracy out of the rifle than you would from a Kalashnikov. It is less expensive than the ACR, and, now that I understand these rifles better, I see that the two are going to fill slightly different niches in the
market.

Anyone who owns an assault rifle, has served in the military, or has a Sony Playstation has likely heard of Bushmaster’s latest offering in the world of assault rifles-the ACR (Advanced Combat Rifle). Thanks to Garret Jones and Jarem Frye, I had the privilege of being among the first to test a production model of the rifle. This is evidenced in the serial #833. As I made the short drive from Eugene to Shooter Review’s headquarters in Monmouth, Oregon, I was eager to get a first
glimpse at what may be the premier rifle of the next generation. Its streamlined, polymerized shell certainly gives it the state-of-the-art looks to dazzle shooters, but what I really wanted to determine was whether the ACRs brilliant form follows brilliant function, and whether its price tag is one of trend, or of value.

The Bushmaster ACR Assault Rifle is operated by a regulated, short-stroke Gas Piston System which eliminates hot gas from being introduced into the Upper and Lower Receivers. The Regulator can be set for Unsuppressed or Suppressed fire. The ACR is a multi-caliber platform and is capable of transitioning to a range of calibers simply by swapping the Barrel Assembly and Bolt, using the appropriate Magazine. Some calibers may require an alternate lower to accept different sized Magazines.

AR type rifle, the company’s engineers decided there was room for a new approach. One key area was the magazine. Other rifles of this type use either proprietary magazines or modified M14 magazines. So when designing a new Bushmaster .308 rifle, it was only logical to choose a highquality, inexpensive and plentiful magazine. The FAL magazine met all three criteria. High-capacity .308 magazines for the ubiquitous Fusil Automatique Leger or FAL are reasonably priced and widely available. With its .308, Bushmaster reengineered the AR originally designed for its magazine to be directly inserted into the magazine well and modified it to use an FAL magazine. The FAL design is inserted front first to engage a magazine well recess and then rotated back to lock into place. Bushmaster’s engineers not only integrated the two components, but did so without modifying the FAL magazines. In the process, it arguably improved the controls over those of traditional AR-type rifles.

The Bushmaster .308 magazine controls are ingenious, both in how they have been adapted to the FAL magazine and in how their ergonomics offer the shooter improved control. The magazine catch is a spring-loaded latch that engages the locking lug on the FAL magazine’s upper rear face. The release is fully ambidextrous. When the release is pressed from either side, a lever retracts the latch and the magazine drops free. Like the magazine catch, the bolt release is a departure. It consists of a one-piece bar that extends across the bottom of the rifle just forward of the trigger guard behind the magazine well. Pressing down on either side releases the bolt. The optional ambidextrous safety transforms the Bushmaster .308 Rifle into the only fully ambidextrous AR-type rifle available. Bushmaster also eliminated the sometimes inconvenient charging handle latch, replacing it with a hidden spring-loaded detent in the center of the charging handle that engages a recess in the upper receiver.

The upper and lower receivers are made of forged 7075-T6 aluminum. About half of the .308’s
components interchange with those of .223-Rem. caliber rifles, but none are stressed, so reliability is unaffected. Two versions of the Bushmaster .308 are available an A2 type with fixed carry handle and sights and an A3 variant with a flat top upper receiver and a three-rail gas block. Barrels are rifled with four lands and grooves in a 1:10" right-hand twist.

The Bushmaster rifle came with an optional Ace Ltd. “ARFX” skeleton stock. This stock replaces the “A2” type fiberglass stock with one of hard anodized aluminum that is both lighter and stronger than the original. The stock has a closed-cell foam cover over the buffer tube. This provides a much improved cheek weld, and dampens vibration and noise. The stock comes with a 1/2" thick recoil pad that has a “tacky” feel that helps hold the stock in position. Bushmaster’s “A3” .308 doesn’t come with iron sights installed, so we chose an EoTech Holographic Weapon Sight (HWS) as our primary sight. This sight has recently been adopted by the U.S. Army and is probably the fastest optical sight available. The 65 m.o.a. circle and 1 m.o.a. dot reticle draw the eye to the target, enabling almost instant engagement.

Shooting the Bushmaster .308 Rifle is little different from firing other AR-type .308 rifles, except that the Bushmaster’s fire controls are reconfigured. All necessary tasks in shooting the rifle can be accomplished without taking one’s hand from the pistol grip. The trigger was a typical AR singlestage unit with some gritty creep and a 6-lb. break. We fired the rifle for accuracy with Black Hills 175-gr. Match, PMC 168-gr. Match and Remington 168-gr. Match ammunition at 100 yds. from sandbags. Our sample rifle was 100 percent reliable and quite accurate. The innovative ergonomics and the availability of inexpensive, quality FAL magazines make the new Bushmaster an attractive choice for those looking for a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .308 Win.

In addition to the 16 1/4" model tested, 20"-barreled rifles (above) also are available. The bolt release is a one-piece bar located just forward of the trigger guard. Lock-up is by the proven Purdey double-underlug method with a slight twist. Beretta angled the lugs slightly to keep the gun tight even as surfaces wear. The lugs are manufactured by electric discharge machining (EDM), and the barrels are fused to the monobloc with a laser making this classically styled side-by-side utterly modern in its manufacture. The surfaces of the breechface and receiver under the barrels are jeweled. The barrels are cold hammer forged, and the 3" chambers are chrome-lined. Beretta’s interchangeable Optimachokes came with our sample, and the 2 3/4"-long tubes feature an elongated cone for the choke constriction. The exterior bluing of the barrels is smooth and even.
Iron Brigade Armory creates the rifles, and Precision Shooting is the premier journal that concerns itself with accurate weapons and their use a good match for this “first to be printed” report on the XM3 sniper rifle its capabilities, its procurement, and its use. A use long overdue. For some years, IBA had been unable to interest the Marine Crops or the US in the rifle that Soldier of Fortune magazine’s Peter Kokalis describes as “the best.” An organization titled DARPA stepped up and provided funding for the production of sixty two of the superior sniper rifles that are now in USMC hands.

Most will not be familiar with DARPA (Defense Advance Research Project Agency), but in laymen’s terms, DARPA is a department answerable directly to the Secretary of Defense that was organized during the Eisenhower Administration to get needed things (whether rifles or small ships) to the troops quickly without suffering the arthritic obstructionism of often glacially-ponderous development and supply channels that are notorious for providing appropriate weaponry almost as the fighting ends. DARPA chooses projects their experts deem urgent and worthy and provides expertise at levels of competence unavailable to most military research and development. DARPA gets things done, but toes are sometimes stepped upon and knee jerk selfinterest turf-protectionism can surface. The XM3 rifle was one of those projects.

Our descriptions and our captioned photos of the XM3 will detail the rifle, but long time readers of Precision Shooting and former sister publications may recall articles explaining how Iron Brigade rifles were built to such high standards standards that make them tougher than “British Oak,” and more durable than any other rifles we have encountered. Those who do not recall can review our bedding methods in The Accurate Rifle, January 2004, pages 7-14. That article explains a lot. The December 1999 and the August 2000 editions of Tactical Shooter offer more useful descriptions and opinions.

It will also be revealing to discover how superbly the rifles are doing in actual combat. Snipers using these rifles routinely e-mail Iron Brigade to report their activities. We cherish their commentaries and repeat a few of them here. The first XM3 rifle used in combat has recorded over one hundred confirmed by its first two snipers. That was months ago, the gun is still going strong, but we hesitate to include repetitive kill reports lest the detailing be resented or inflation of body counts be suspected. We will include one more, however. Gun number two accounted for ten confirmed with its first seventeen shots.

Those statistics are impressive, but the best is yet to come and here it is. All of those shots were at night at ranges up to eight hundred yards hits that would be highly improbable with any other rifle. There was no aimed return fire. This is the story of one of those firefights. Three men armed with Kalashnikovs were detected setting a roadside bomb in the dark of night at about four hundred yards. The sniper fired and dropped number one. Numbers two and three saw nothing except their companion’s collapse and could have heard nothing more than the directionless snap of a bullet’s supersonic passage or the flat smack of the bullet’s strike. They chose to flee.
Unfortunately for them, they ran directly toward the sniper, who shot each one time.

Every XM3 Rifle is capable of shooting sub-minute of angle (three shot groups) at 1000 yard. These days, that may not seem exceptional, but the XM3 has only an 18 ½-inch long barrel and wears a Sure Fire© sound suppressor. “Wait a minute,” you say. “Only an 18 ½-inch barrel and it shoots sub-minute at 1000 yards?” That is correct. Now how could that be? We began attaining 1000-yard accuracy from an 18 ½-inch long barrel by going to a six-groove barrel with a 1 in 10 twist. We use Hart barrels, and Hart makes no bad barrels. Start from there, and you might approach 1000-yard capabilities, but you would beunlikely to match an XM3 without the rest of our accuracy story.

The US Army has attempted to modify its M24 sniper rifles by similarly shortening their barrels, and they liked their result, but they only tested under 20-inch barrels to three hundred yards. The M24 has a 5-groove barrel, and its twist is 11.25. Beyond 600 yards, the accuracy of their shortened barrel is gone. We call that failure. The M40 series Marine Corps rifles are in the same boat. The M40A3 boat anchors have 1 in 12 twist, and if seriously shortened, they cannot be accurate beyond six hundred yards. To retain accuracy in a barrel less than 20 inches long in .308 Winchester, you absolutely must go to a 1 in 10 twist barrel. The services should purchase new barrels in that twist.

In testing, Iron Brigade uses Match grade, 175-grain Black Hills ammunition. Using M40A1, M40A3, and M24 sniper rifles as standards to test against, the XM3 shot straighter under every condition. When being tested for safety and accuracy beyond 1000 yards, by Crane Naval Weapons Station, the XM3 out-shot all of the .308 (7.62 NATO) rifles, including those listed above, and at those extreme ranges, the XM3 rifles equaled the accuracy performance of the .300 Winchester Magnums being used as standard test weapons.
Soldiers like to exchange stories about the lethality of .50 caliber sniperrifles. One story has it that the M107 Long-Range Sniper Rifle (LRSR) “reached out and touched someone” from 1,400 meters away while the insurgent hid atop a water tower with a rocket propelled grenade. What really happens in battle we may never know for sure, but the facts about the sniper rifles that Program Executive Office Soldier’s (PEO) Soldier Weapons program provides to soldiers speak for themselves: the rifles are accurate, reliable, sustainable, and the Soldier Weapons program gets them to soldiers in record time. After comprehensive testing, independent evaluation and full material release, the M107 Sniper Rifle was acquired and ready for fielding in less than 36 months, thanks to the accelerated acquisition path offered by the Soldier Enhancement Program (SEP).

In fact, soldier feedback drove the SEP requirements for the new XM110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) contract. Like the M107, the XM110 Sniper Rifle is what the Army calls a Non-Developmental Item, Commercial-Off-The-Shelf product. That means that the Army “militarizes” the designs of small arms already on the market and shortens the acquisition cycle by reducing or eliminating the research and development phase. However, Soldier Weapons representatives are quick to point out that this path does not mean a relaxation of the Army’s high standards.

The SEP approach and the acquisition of these off-the-shelf products enable Soldier Weapons to validate product maturity and readiness by focusing on extensive and comprehensive
technical and operational testing prior to the production phase. The test results may reveal needed modifications and enhancements. Once the weapon meets the Army’s performance criteria, it becomes part of the Army’s inventory.

LTC Kevin Stoddard, Product Manager for the Crew Served Weapons component of this program, is confident the combined industry and government team working on the XM110 Sniper Rifle will come through again for soldiers on the XM110 program. “The gun has actually been performing extremely well,” Stoddard said. “We will have technical and operational testing completed by early summer and begin fielding the first of 4,492 XM110s by January.”

The XM110 Rifle is intended to replace the bolt-action, M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS), but the future of the M24 is still undecided. It will depend upon an upcoming Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) analysis. “Ultimately, snipers will have what they need for increased survivability,” Stoddard said. “For now, we have the XM110, M107 and the M24. All are accurate, reliable and sustainable.”
(“Remington”), a member of the Freedom Group of Companies, is pleased to announce that the United States Army’s Joint Munitions and Lethality Contracting Center has awarded Remington a Firm Fixed Price (FFP) Indefinite Delivery/ Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract (W15QKN-10-R-0403) for the upgrade of up to 3,600 M24 Sniper Weapon Systems (SWS) currently fielded to the Army pending type classification as the “M24E1”. The major configuration change for this system is the caliber conversion from 7.62mm NATO (.308 Winchester) to .300 Winchester Magnum to provide soldier’s with additional precision engagement capability and range. The contract is for a 5-year period and has a potential value of up to $28.2 million. This award follows a full and open competitive evaluation lasting 9 months, which began with the release of the Army’s Request for Proposal (RFP) on 13 January 2010. The program will be executed under the authority of Project Manager Soldier Weapons, Picatinny Arsenal, NJ, and managed by its subordinate unit, Product Manager Individual Weapons.

Remington has a 22-year tradition of manufacturing long-range precision sniper rifles for the U.S. military and this award demonstrates Remington’s continued leadership in the art of producing sniper rifles for military applications. The M24 SWS was competitively selected by the Army as its first purpose-built sniper rifle on 27 July 1988, and the first 100 production systems were fielded on 25 October 1988. Thus far, Remington has produced nearly 15,000 M24 Sniper Weapon Systems, and the M24 sniper is still produced today. Each rifle is tested to meet (and typically exceeds) the requirement to fire 1 minute-of-angle (less than 2-inch group at 200 yards) before being released for fielding. Remington is the military depot-level maintenance facility for the M24 for repairs and overhauls of hundreds of fielded systems each year for the Army, other military services, agencies, and nations.

We are honored to be providing US soldiers with the M24E1 sniper rifle solution an evolutionary leap in precision engagement capability and survivability,” noted Jason Schauble, Vice President of Remington’s Defense Division, “Remington has made significant investments in manufacturing modernization, end-user driven research and development, and complementary technologies to provide a wide range of reliable, durable, and maintainable small arms solutions, and the M24E1 sniper Rifle award is a significant achievement for our company and its proud US workforce.

This long tradition of production and repair makes Remington the natural choice to upgrade this venerable system for the Government. Current operations in Southwest Asia exposed the need for a more powerful and longer-range sniper round. The baseline M24 Rifle was designed from inception to chamber a longer and more powerful round than the 7.62mm NATO, so an obvious solution to the capability gap was to finally exploit the M24’s long bolt action and chamber it for .300 Winchester Magnum.
The M24E1 Rifle capabilities meet the initial requirement spelled out in the Operational Needs Statement (ONS) submitted by the 10th Mountain Division on 14 March 2006 while conducting operations in Afghanistan. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Michael Arcuri (D-NY) supported this operational need and led the effort in the Congress to ensure funding of the Army’s M24 upgrade program in both FY09 and FY10. Senator Schumer and Representative Arcuri were also instrumental in supporting a revision of the New York State law on suppressors to allow the Remington facility in Ilion N.Y. to possess and test military weapons.

Remington’s winning sniper rifle features the following enhancements above and beyond caliber conversion from 7.62mm NATO to 300 Winchester Magnum:

- A completely new chassis (stock) assembly, which maximizes the amount of physical adjustments for the sniper to provide a true customized fit. The chassis has a folding buttstock that radically shortens the system for easier transport and greater concealment during movement and accommodates the mounting of accessories via removable Mil Std 1913 Picatinny Rails.

- An improved 6.5-20x50 variable power Leupold rifle scope with an enhanced reticle within the first focal plane and a .300 Winchester Magnum bullet-drop compensator (BDC)

- A quick-attach/detach Advanced Armament Corp. suppressor with muzzle brake

- A 5-round detachable box magazine

- Advanced corrosion resistant coatings throughout the system

While virtually every aspect of the M24E1 Sniper Rifle has been updated and improved, the U.S. Army specifically required that the M24E1 continue to be built around the same 700 series long action and that the fire control requirement continue to be met by the combat proven M24 SWS fire control. The M24E1's fire control is set to a pull weight requirement of 3 to 5 lbs pull +/- 8oz, and has been found to survive near constant use, in and out of theater, for well over 10 years of service without adjustment or replacement. Remington Defense looks forward to working with PM Soldier Weapons to rapidly field this system to the Army and other American military services, agencies, and allies to improve the capability of our nation’s highly trained and capable snipers.
In a high confidence environment2 the hit percentage is maximized at each range due to the uncertainties being at a minimum. In this environment, all 3 ammo types maintain a 100% hit percentage out to 800 meters, and the 230 OTM Sniper Rifle to 900 meters. At 1000 meters, the hit percentage for the A191 Sniper Rifle, MK248 Mod1 Sniper Rifle, and 230 OTM are: 93%, 96%, and 98% respectively. The 5% spread can be more or less important based on the type of analysis being done. At 1100 meters, the spread from best to worst hit probability (A191 being worst and 230 OTM being best) is 12%, and at 1200 meters the spread is 17%. At 1300 meters and beyond, the 230 OTM maintains approximately 20% advantage in hit probability compared to the A191, and 10% advantage in comparison to the MK248 Mod1 .

The ranges at which the ammo achieves a 90% hit percentage. MK248 Mod1 sniper rifle achieves 90% hit percentage 68 meters beyond A191 Rifle, and the 230 OTM Rifle pushes 90 meters beyond MK248 Mod1, which is 158 meters beyond A191. illustration of the shot patterns at 1300 meters for the 3 ammo types. At 1300 meters and beyond, there is a 10% improvement in hit percentage between all 3 ammo types. In other words, MK248 Mod1 Sniper Rifle is 10% better than A191, and 230 OTM is 10%-11% better than MK248 Mod1.

The nominal uncertainties which characterize medium uncertainty WEZ are shown in Table 2. The WEZ is somewhat limited by uncertainties considered average for trained shooters and average equipment. In this uncertainty scenario, 100% hit percentage is only maintained out to 500 meters, 600 for the 230 OTM. By 1000 meters, the hit percentage is reduced to 47%, 56% and 70% for A191, MK248 Mod1, and 230 OTM respectively. By 1500 meters, the hit percentages for the 3 ammo types are 18%, 20% and 25%.

The 90% hit percentage thresholds for a medium confidence environment are shown in Table 5. MK248 Mod1 pushes 26 meters past A191, and the 230 OTM pushes 79 meters beyond MK248 Mod1, which is 105 meters beyond A191. Below shows a graphic representation of the hit percentage on the IPSC target at 1000 meters. Note that the vertical dispersion, which is primarily determined by muzzle velocity consistency is similar for all 3 rounds. This is the effect of the 15 fps standard deviation in muzzle velocity used for the medium quality ammunition. The real difference in the shot patterns is in the horizontal plane, with the higher BC bullet having less horizontal dispersion and more shots on target in the +/- 2.5 mph wind uncertainty.

The shot patterns may not look dramatically different, but the hit percentages are quite striking. The MK248 Mod1 achieves 9% higher hit percentage than the A191, and the 230 OTM achieves 23% higher hit percentage than the A191, and 13% higher than MK248 Mod1 at this range (1000 meters).

The low confidence environment models a shooter with minimal training and shooting ability in addition to ammo of poor consistency. Details of a low confidence environment are listed in Table 2. In a low confidence uncertainty scenario, 100% hit probability is limited to 300 meters for all 3 ammo types. By 1000 meters, the hit percentage is reduced to 31% for A191, 35% for MK248 Mod1, and 41% for the 230 OTM. Under such high uncertainties, hit percentages are 1500 meters are quite low for all three ammo types. The 90% hit percentage thresholds for a low confidence environment are shown in Table 6. Table 6 shows that the 90% hit percentage is affected least in the low confidence environment, only being extended from 502 to 558 (56 meters) from worst to best ammo type. This minor increase in 90% range is due to the overwhelming nature of the uncertainties involved in the low confidence environment.

To recap; the high confidence environment allowed for a 158 meter improvement in the 90% range from the worst to the best performer, the medium confidence environment allowed for a 105 meter improvement, and the low confidence environment only nets a 56 meter improvement. This should not come as a surprise; that a highly trained shooter operating in a minimum uncertainty environment can maximize range extension from improved ballistic performance. On the other hand, in environments that have a great deal of uncertainty including lack of rangefinders, and only estimating wind with within +/- 4 mph, the improvement in ballistic performance is much less profound in terms of extending the 90% range. The overwhelming effect of lower confidence environments is a reduction in hit percentage at all ranges.

Ballistic performance related comparisons are not the only considerations to be made when assessing the suitability of various ammo types. The following sections address some of the components that are not captured in the hit percentage portion of the WEZ analysis, but are none-the-less important considerations.

Prior studies have conducted basic comparisons between A191 and MK248 Mod1 ammo types for use in the 300 Win Mag. The results of this WEZ analysis supports prior conclusions that the MK248 Mod1 is superior to A191 in supersonic range, kinetic energy, and hit percentage regardless of the uncertainty environment. In addition to verifying those findings, an alternative bullet option (the Berger 230 grain Hybrid OTM) was assessed and found to be superior to both A191 and MK248 Mod1 by a substantial margin. The improvement in 90% hit percentage range for the 230 OTM is about the same as the improvement of MK248 Mod1 over A191. With similar terminal performance, and potential for increased barrel life, the Berger 230 grain Hybrid OTM is the clear choice for maximizing hit percentages and extending effective range of the 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge in the XM-2010 platform.
The XM2010 ESR is equipped with a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50mm scope. The variable power scope includes a first focal plane reticle so when the user dials in, the reticle pattern scales with the zoom enabling the sniper to estimate range at any power setting. The scope also employs a reticle pattern that facilitates faster and more accurate range estimation and utilizes mil turret adjustments to eliminate MOA to mil conversion. The targeting stadia reticle allows for simultaneous elevation and windage holds that eliminate the need to dial in adjustments.
This performance is achieved by revolutionary new, extremely efficient powders optimized for each load. These powders produce very high performance yet do not produce excessive recoil or compromise accuracy. This performance is achieved because the powder is completely burned prior to the bullet leaving the barrel and imparts as much energy as possible to the bullet. As a result, the muzzle exit pressure is lower and the muzzle gas velocity is dramatically lower than for previous high performance ammunition. This reduces the rocket nozzle effect from the gases leaving the barrel, resulting in lower recoil levels and high levels of accuracy.

In the past, small arms performance has been limited by the powder’s ability to completely burn by the time the bullet exits the muzzle. To attempt to get higher performance, high charge weights of a slow burning powder were used to attempt to maximize muzzle velocity. Powders were not progressive enough to allow these heavy charges of slow powder to be completely burned by the time the bullet left the muzzle, especially with lighter weight bullets. The end result was very modest increases in velocity with heavy recoil and many times unacceptable accuracy. Superformance powders solve this problem because of their ability to completely burn by bullet muzzle exit. All loads are designed to fill the cartridge case. Yet, because of the efficient burning characteristics, virtually all the powder is burned by bullet muzzle exit.

This results in a much higher percentage of the available powder energy being transferred to the projectile, rather than being blown out the end of the barrel as unburned powder, producing higher velocities with a smaller charge weight. This also results in lower muzzle exit pressure and lower velocity of muzzle gases. A very useful by-product of the highly efficient burning nature of these powders is very small velocity loses with shorter barrel lengths. We tested a 300 Winchester Magnum load by firing it in a barrel that had been shortened to 20 inches. The Superformance ammunition gave up an average of only 18 fps per inch. This is roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the velocity loss per inch of barrel length that would be experienced with conventional powders in a 300 Winchester Magnum.
Superformance propellant design also produces very uniform performance in extreme weather conditions. Most Superformance loads lose very little or no velocity at low temperature and gain very little or no velocity at high temperatures. The performance and point of aim will not change drastically in extreme temperature situations. For a Superformance 30-06 150 gr SST load the performance was as follows; +70 deg F: 3,071 fps @ 56,800 psi; +140 deg F: 3,128 fps @ 61,400 psi; -15 deg F: 3,022 fps @ 58,100 psi. From the African plains to the freezing Arctic, Superformance will deliver consistent performance.
This Armalite AR-30M sniper is a smaller-caliber, magazine-fed weapon related to the AR-50 antimateriel rifle. The stock and receiver are built primarily of aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, with the buttstock portion being equipped with a simple adjustable polymer shell for a cheekpiece, and a padded buttplate. The stock may be removed for storage or transport (but cannot be fired without the stock). The free-floating barrel is of chrome-moly steel and is triple-lapped; it is heavy, 26 inches long, and in the case of the .338 Lapua chambering, a huge multi-baffle muzzle brake is standard. (This muzzle brake is an option with the other chamberings.) Most operating parts are also of steel. The receiver contains a V-shaped block in which the action is bedded, which gives the action rock-solid operation to further enhance accuracy and reliability.

The fore end has a groove which can be used for mounting a bipod, sling swivel, or certain other accessories. The pistol grip is identical to that of an M-16A2. All steel parts are manganese phosphate-coated, and aluminum alloy parts are hard anodized. Currently, the chamberings available for the AR-30M are 7.62mm NATO, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum. Armalite also produced and marketed a small number of AR-30Ms in .30-06 Springfield and .243 Winchester, but these did not prove to be popular with the public and were quickly withdrawn; they are quite hard to find today. Originally, both 5 and 10-round magazines were produced for the Armalite AR-30M Sniper Rifle, but only 5-round magazines are made today.

The new .338 Lapua Magnum SHADOW sound suppressor from SRT Arms raises the bar on suppressors of large caliber. Remarkably small and light for a large-caliber can, both performance and workmanship are outstanding. Previously, I’ve reported that the SRT’s AZTECH baffle is one of the most important designs in the 100+ year history of sound suppressors. While early variants of the baffle were impressive, I also reported that one of the beauties of the AZTECH baffle was that the design offered a number of promising ways to improve performance even more. The latest variant of the AZTECH baffle fulfills that promise. It’s an impressive improvement upon the basic AZTECH architecture, delivering excellent sound suppression and groups as small as 0.19 MOA (center to center). I evaluated the Shadow’s performance on an ArmaLite AR-30 .338 Lapua Magnum rifle.

The first things about the .338 SHADOW to leap out at you are its small size and light weight. The .338 SHADOW is only 2 inches longer that its .30 caliber sibling, despite the fact that the .338 Lapua Magnum produces nearly twice as much combustion gas as the .308. Since the .338 SHADOW only has about 20 percent more volume than the .308 SHADOW, anyone who has not observed the .338 suppressor in use would have to wonder how such a small can could deliver acceptable, much less good, sound reduction or recoil mitigation.

Even if you factor in that the AZTECH baffle is a pressure-driven design, you wonder how such a small gun muffler could work the gases hard enough to significantly reduce gunshot noise without degrading accuracy. To cope with the extra pressure generated by the .338 and yet keep the weight of the suppressor at a minimum, SRT fits a pressed stainless steel sleeve over the rear of the can for reinforcement. It is placed on the suppressor tube by heating the sleeve to expand its diameter while cooling the tube to shrink its diameter. The sleeve is then quickly pressed onto the tube. Once the temperatures have equilibrated, the sleeve remains securely bound to the suppressor tube. After the whole unit is assembled, 12 plug welds secure the baffles and tubes together into one monolithic structure.

Fabricated from stainless steel alloys, the SHADOW .338 caliber suppressor is 10.25 inches long. The suppressor tube is 1.5 inches in diameter. The sleeve increases the can’s rear diameter to 1.62 inches over the rear-most 5 inches of the suppressor. It weighs 41 ounces. The .338 SHADOW is lighter than expected because the entire tube is not the thickness needed to cope with the high pressure in the rear of the can, and because the can only contains four baffles. The suppressor is available in a non-reflective natural finish or in a flat black KG GunKote as standard. The SRT suppressor only adds 7 inches to the overall length of the AR-30 rifle and 26 ounces to system weight. Safe to say, that’s impressive.

It is also worth noting that the SHADOW .338 suppressor heralds a new level of fit and finish for the company. I’ve owned and used SRT suppressors for more than a decade, and I’ve always been very pleased with their performance and durability, but their cosmetics tended to be a bit short of the very best players in the industry. No longer. The SHADOW’s cosmetics are “world class,” especially considering that the baffles are plug-welded to the tube in 12 places. The welds have been finished, so they are invisible. For those who came in late, Doug Melton is the genius behind the SHADOW’s design. Melton has earned his place in the history books as one of the most innovative thinkers in the industry ever. SRT Arms is a subsidiary of a larger corporation specializing in fluidics and material engineering. This is a small company, yet it has made significant contributions to the state of suppressor art.

SRT produces a full line of carbine, rifle, submachine, and .22 rimfire silencers, as well as integral and muzzle .22 rimfire suppressors. They even do custom work. SRT sound suppressors are quite unusual in this day and age in that some can be disassembled partially or completely (depending on the design) for cleaning and maintenance. Suppressors based upon the AZTECH baffle, however, are sealed units so that key structures inside always remain properly aligned. They can be cleaned by simply immersing them in a suitable solvent overnight, draining, and blowing them dry. This is only worth doing every 3,000 rounds or so. That said, I will admit under cross-examination that I’ve used one SRT suppressor for 12 years and never cleaned it. Yet it still performs as well as it did on the first day.
Time Zerohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11367109573475304821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1002669283865216025.post-74895411332576844282012-04-04T08:09:00.000-07:002012-04-04T08:09:06.753-07:00Tactical Rifles Tactical Para RifleAt Tactical Rifles their slogan is, “It’s not simply work, it’s a life long passion.” Says David B. Rooney, of Tactical Rifles: “From start to finish, all who handle our tactical rifles throughout assembly do so treating them as their own. Whether it’s a law enforcement or military operator, or a private customer, he or she will derive many years of reliable service of the highest order. The rifle will perform first and every time.”

For its custom precision rifles, Tactical Rifles (TR) uses the Remington Model 700 action unless otherwise specified. However, the action is completely gone through to assure precise alignment of bolt, receiver and barrel. Starting with Krieger hand-lapped barrel blanks, Tactical Rifles cuts the threads, match reams the chamber, and then turns a #7 contour as standard. However, other contours and fluting are optional, but TR prefers keeping weight reduction minimal to reduce the possibility of stress. Also standard is the AI stock designed by the late Malcolm Cooper. Consisting of a solid aluminum chassis, the AI stock has almost indestructible side panels that are painted to the customer’s specifications. A 5-round, or the new capacity 10-round, detachable box magazine (DBM) locks into an aluminum block in the stock. This high grade magazine is of the double column type with a single position feed for optimum reliability. The single position feed lips do not release the cartridge until it has partially entered the chamber, making it a controlled feed.

Available in either folding or fixed Tactical Long Range versions, the AI stock uses an integral pistol grip/thumbhole. For those who prefer a more conventional stock, McMillan Fiberglass stocks can be substituted on the model TR. For ease and speed of manipulation, the round bolt knob is removed and a conical knob is screwed on much like that first introduced on a rifle by Steyr 20 years ago. The factory trigger system is also removed and replaced by one of several aftermarket match triggers. The one TR prefers is the Shilen match trigger.
David Rooney reports that the goal of Tactical Rifles is to provide a rifle that can get 1/2 minute of angle (MOA) accuracy with any quality factory match ammunition rather than with tailored handloads. Each TR rifle comes with a certified 1/2 MOA or better test target. However, TR has a strict break-in procedure it recommends for its rifles. This amounts to thoroughly cleaning and removing all copper fouling from the bore after every round for the first ten rounds fired, and then after every five rounds for at least the next 40 rounds. For this, Tactical Rifles recommends Sweet’s 762 Copper Remover.

The caliber that remains most popular with TR is the .308 Winchester, but another model is the M40-223. Also popular is the Tactical LR in .300 WSM that offers a flatter trajectory than the .308 at 1,000 yards using the same bullet. The .300 WSM works flawlessly in the 700 action with TR’s single column DBM. Recently I received a sample Tactical Para Rifle in .308 Win from Tactical Rifles for a test. This Tactical Para (TP) came with the OD green folding stock that, all things considered, may be one of the finest stocks of its kind ever made. Stock features include an adjustable cheekpiece and butt, ambidextrous sling mounts, a rail on the bottom for a hand rest, and a stud for a Parker-Hale bipod. With a positive lock-up this stock has it all almost.

Instead of the 26-inch barrel of Tactical Rifles Tactical Long Range Rifle, the Para comes with a 20-incher that’s ideal for urban use and suitable on out to 500 yards or so. While the barrel and other metal parts can also be had in an OD green finish, this one was matte black. The barrel’s #7 contour left its muzzle with a diameter of 0.85 of an inch, and it had a recessed target crown.

My sample Tactical Para rifle came with a M1913 Mil-Std extended rail base (often referred to as a “Picatinny” rail) as standard on its receiver, but came without a scope. For optics I mounted a Springfield 6- 20x56mm Government Model using the ARMS #22M 30mm ThrowLever rings. I have used this excellent scope for years on a variety of test rifles, and as good as it is, Springfield has now totally redesigned and improved its entire scope line. Although I was able to examine and test a number of these new Springfield scopes before I wrote this, I was not able to get one in time for the Tactical Para. Springfield’s new scope line will offer a variety of sizes and reticles, and will retain the internal leveler that Springfield made famous.

Where the true M1913 rail is concerned, there are no rings finer than the ARMS ThrowLever rings, in my opinion, but if you want a logical reason, it’s that the rail and mounts were designed together. If your rail is not a true M1913 (or close enough), the ARMS rings probably won’t work, and copies of them may only ruin, or cause excessive wear on your rail. As with anything that has threads, mounts with hex nuts require a threadlocking compound to stay put, and if removed, may or may not return to zero.

Returning to zero is important where a scope must be removed in order to use a night vision device (NVD), and if you’re a military/police operator, you probably know how important this is. Mounting Solutions Plus now offers an M1913 extension rail called the MOAPAL. Made of 4140 steel, the MSP rail uses ARMS ThrowLevers to lock onto a receiver M1913 rail bringing the mounting surface above and beyond the factory rail. This easily accommodates a vast variety of eye relief needs common to NVDs.
It’s one of thengreat ironies of our day that many of the firearms most sought after by American shooters come from countries where private gun ownership is restrictive at best. One of the hottest cartridges to come from the “old country” is the M40 Lapua Rifle (6.5x47 Lapua). Long known for their innovation and accuracy, the Finnish company has released a round that has grabbed the attention of precision shooters across the pond and has just recently started to catch on here.

My first introduction to the cartridge was during a telephone conversation with my friend David Rooney of Tactical Rifles. David mentioned that during a military sniper competition held last year in Europe, the M40 6.5x47 Lapua was the number-one performer, edging out the venerable .308 (7.62x51 NATO).

This cartridge was developed as a joint venture between Lapua and the Swiss gun maker Grünig & Elmiger. For starters, the 6.5x47 shares very similar dimensions with the .308, so similar in fact that the platform for the 6.5 is essentially the same as the 7.62mm NATO. The projectile is a 6.5mm or 0.264 of an inch. The Lapua factory loads utilize their Scenar projectiles in 100-, 108-, 123-, and 139-grain weights. While factory ammunition is a bit difficult to come by in the United States, unprimed brass can be readily purchased, as can the 6.5mm projectiles.

As for the rifle itself, this long gun is based upon the M40 design. The short action is a Remington 700 with a Tactical Rifles floorplate assembly for detachable magazines. Both 5- and 10-round magazines are offered. The 1-in-8-inch twist stainless steel match grade barrel is 22 inches long and has a recessed match crown. A McMillan A1-3 stock supports the free-floated barrel and action. Atop the rifle I mounted a NightForce optic. This riflescope is 5.5x22 power with a 50mm objective lens. It is mounted to the gun with a NightForce direct mount. The barrel, action and scope were finished in OD green at the Tactical Rifles. As for the Naturally, the entire rifle was assembled with precision and durability in mind. Each Tactical Rifles creation is custom built and the parts are hand fitted with attention to detail. The bolt action is sure and smooth and the trigger is precision tuned to approximately 3.5 pounds.

As I mentioned earlier, my range testing would include a number of different loads including both factory ammunition and custom hand-loaded rounds. My first chore would be to chronograph each one. As I had not worked with the 6.5x47 previously I was not sure what to expect. It turned out that all rounds averaged in the 2,600 to 2,700 feet per second (fps) range. For a benchmark I would pattern each load at 100 yards. As this is a true longrange weapon, the elevation turret on the NightForce scope was zeroed out for 100 meters. I would soon discover that this rifle was not a MOA gun. It wasn’t even a 0.5-MOA gun. No, when fired from a solid platform with a steady hand, the custom M40 proved to be a sub-0.25-MOA precision instrument.

While not every load grouped into 0.25 of an inch or better, three of them did and all the other loads clustered below a 0.5 of an inch with regularity. While I normally fire four or five rounds on paper and calculate the best three to minimize human error, I found that this was not really necessary with this rifle. Keep in mind that I was not firing from sandbags or some type of vise rest. For stability I used the Harris bipod and the CTK Monopod. A steel and concrete bench was my shooting platform. The best group recorded using this setup was a 0.18-of-an-inch three-shot group with the 123-grain Lapua factory load. The 142- grain MatchKing hand load was hot on its heals with a 0.20-of-an-inch cluster. The next in line was a 0.25 of an inch group from the Lapua 139-grain factory load.

Naturally, such a rifle as this is just getting warmed up at 100 yards. Out at 250 yards my range has a 6x6-inch swinging steel plate. Adding a dozen clicks of elevation I smacked the plate with the first shot. Putting rounds on paper at that distance, I had no trouble posting 0.5 of an inch groups with regularity. The 142-grain MatchKing posted a very respectable 0.44-of-aninch cluster. As mentioned previously, the distance limit on my range was 350 yards. Again, there was a swinging steel plate, this time 8x10 inches. Applying another 12 clicks of elevation, the reactive target was struck time after time. During my first session I was able to dial in the scope and record shot groups in the 1.5- to 2-inch range at 350 yards. This is certainly an honorable achievement for any rifle and ammunition combination. While reviewing this custom M40 Rifle I actually hit the range on several occasions. Before putting pen to paper I went out one more time and was glad I did.

For this last session I would again stretch out the 142-grain MatchKing load. Through my spotting scope I could see the resulting three-shot cluster. I felt pretty good about it, but it was not until I went downrange to pull the target that I truly realized just how well the rifle and the new 6.5x47 load performed. The group measured 0.55 of an inch, center to center. If you consider 3.5 Monopod rest from CTK Precision. inches as MOA, and 1.75 inches as 1/2- MOA, then 0.88 of an inch is 1/4-MOA. When you fire a sub-1/4-MOA group it’s a good time to pack up for the day and that is what I did.
The SiG-Sauer SSG 2000 Sniper Rifle is known for its smooth bolt action and efficient muzzle brake; locking and unlocking also make use of a nonrotating bolt, resulting in a cocking handle turn of only 65 degrees. The 24.1-inch barrel is heavy and hammer-forged, and tipped with a combination flash suppressor/muzzle brake. The trigger group includes a low-weight firing trigger with a pull of 4 pounds and a set trigger which reduces the trigger pull weight to only 0.5 pounds. (0.5 pounds is considered a good pull weight for competition shooters, but way too light for snipers).

The safety allows the bolt to be opened and the weapon unloaded and loaded, but the bolt cannot be closed again until the weapon is taken off safe again. There is also a chamber-loaded indicator which can be felt as well as seen. The stock is of fine wood and is of the thumbhole-type; it has a buttplate with a recoil pad and which is adjustable for length and height. Stocks may be left or right-handed as necessary. The SSG-2000 has no iron sights, but is equipped with sight rings for most Western telescopic sights. The standard telescopic sights sold with the SSG-2000 Rifle are a Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6x42 or a Zeiss Diatal ZA 8x56T.
Two trigger units are available for the SiG-Sauer SSG-3000 Sniper Rifle: a standard trigger and a two-stage trigger. Both of these units are adjustable for pull weight and length, and as most of the SSG-3000 is modular, wither trigger unit may be used in any particular SSG-3000 Sniper Rifle. Originally, the SSG-3000 was built from fine-quality laminated wood, but most have been built with a McMillan polymer stock. In both cases, the stocks have padded buttplates adjustable for length of pull, height, and angle, and also have a padded cheekpiece adjustable for height.

Variants of the SSG-3000 include the SSG-3000 Tactical, with a shorter barrel and a larger muzzle brake (and not found in a wood-stocked version), and a training version of the SSG-3000 Sniper which fires .22 Long Rifle ammunition. Both are otherwise identical to the standard SSG-3000 Rifle and share the same features other than those required for their modifications. Training models were often converted to assassination weapons by the addition of a silencer, or used by civilians.

This is a SiG-Sauer SSG-3000 sniper rifle built to the technical standards of the SSG-2000, but in a smaller and lighter package. One of the differences includes the use of a MIL-STD-1913 rail for mounting optics instead of the SSG-2000’s mount and rings (though the mount/ring setup is still available for the SSG-3000 if desired); there are still no iron sights on the rifle. The standard telescopic sight sold with the SSG-3000 Rifle is a special version of the Hensoldt 1.5-6x24L BL, designed specifically for use with the SSG-3000. The receiver is machined from a single billet of light alloy, and the bolt’s locking lugs lock directly to the barrel instead of the receiver. The receiver is stressed as little as possible. The bolt contains a light firing pin and also has a short travel, producing a very short lock time. The 24.1-inch barrel is heavy and cold hammer-forged, and tipped with a combination muzzle brake/flash suppressor.

The SiG-Sauer SG-550 Sniper differs from a standard SG-550 assault rifle in several respects. First, it has no automatic fire capability. The barrel is cold hammer-forged instead of being a standard SG-550 barrel, and it is heavier than a standard barrel, lengthened to 25.6 inches, and has no flash suppressor. The trigger is two-stage, match quality, and more sensitive than the standard SiG-Sauer SG-550 trigger at 3.3 pounds of pull weight. The SG-550 Sniper is equipped with a light alloy bipod which folds and is also adjustable for height and cant. The stock is also made from light alloy, but includes a buttplate adjustable for length of pull and height (and somewhat for angle) and has a rubber recoil pad. The cheekpiece is adjustable for height.

The recommended for transport or storage, as the folded stock is in the way of the trigger, pistol grip, fire controls, and most of the magazine. The pistol grip, made from polymer, is adjustable for angle and includes an adjustable handrest as well as a small counterweight to the long barrel. On top of the receiver is a MIL-STD-1913 rail for optics mounting, which extends down the ends of the handguards; there are no iron sights. (The standard scope for Swiss forces, and the one which is sold with the rifle, is a special version of a Hendsoldt 1.5-6x telescopic sight which was designed specifically for the SG-550 Sniper.) An anti-mirage band is optional, but when mounted it covers the part of the MIL-STD-1913 rail on the handguards.
This is the sniper rifle version of the Swiss SG-550 assault rifle. The SSG-550 Sniper was developed primarily at the behest of police departments in Western Europe and a few other countries, primarily for SRT-type units, to be a short to mediumrange marksman’s weapon; in the circumstances where the SiG-Sauer SG-550 Sniper is intended for use, the shortcomings of the 5.56mm NATO cartridge in a sniper’s weapon is not a great disadvantage.
The receiver and action are milled from a single block of high-grade steel. Atop this receiver is a 9.5-inch length of MIL-STD-1913 rail, with an up to 40-MOA slope to help align optics. Though the buyer may mount any optic he chooses, the standard scope is one of Schmidt & Bender’s line.

The rear of the MIL-STD-1913 rail and the front of the barrel just behind the muzzle have flip-up iron sights. The safeties include a fully-protected bolt stop/release, and bolt uses a short throw. The bolt handle curves a bit to the rear, as this was found to be most ergonomic for use with the Brugger & Thomet APR-338 Sniper Rifle. The barrel is 27 inches, free-floating, and fluted, and the barrel can be removed and replaced with a simple wrench rather than requiring a special tool. The barrel is tipped with a two-baffle muzzle brake, and the muzzle has a cap which protects threads that allow the use of a silencer (the one which comes with the rifle fits over and covers the muzzle brake). The upper receiver is bolted to an aluminum lower receiver, and the fore-end has a removable bipod adjustable for height and cant. An accessory groove underneath the fore-end allows for the installation of a hand stop. The stock is of aluminum and polymer, and is adjustable for length of pull, cheekpiece, and height of the butt. It also folds to the right.

The APR-338 weapon system is basically consisting of a bolt action rifle cal. .338 LM with suppressor, a rifle scope and a user specific cartridge. The system is intended to be a soldier's primary weapon and serve him as anti personnel rifle. The system must be able to hit a head-sized target up to 600 m distance or a torso-sized target over 1300 m and more with a first round hit probability of over 99%. Although being a precision-instrument, the system must resist the harsh military use and remain functional in typical operational environments.

As the rifle was designed according to CIP-standards, every cartridge .338 Lapua Magnum and 8.6x70 LM (with exceptions as stated below) manufactured according to the same standards can be used with the rifle. CIP standard according cartridges normally carry a proof mark on the box. Best results have been achieved with Lapua Scenar 250 grs. With respect to the muzzle brake and especially when using the rifle with mounted suppressor, the use of bullets which disintegrate at the muzzle departure is forbidden. The shrapnels are very likely to hurt people sidewards to the weapon or can choke the suppressor. This concerns namely sub-caliber bullets with sabot.

The lower receiver is the core of the rifle. Integrated is the manual safety and it also includes the bipod assembly and a forend assembly with ergonomical panels. The more, the forend is offering mounting interfaces for further accessories, e.g. laser designation systems and Anschutz front handstop. At its rear end, the folding stock is attached; folding stock and lower receiver are forming something that is close to the stock of a conventional rifle design. On its top, the upper receiver is attached. Therefore, the surface between upper and lower receiver is what in conventional rifle designs is called the bedding. Under the receiver attaches the trigger group. Unlike conventional rifle designs, the trigger is not attached to the receiver and therefore the classical distinction between "firing unit" and "carrying unit" is hardly applicable for the actual design. The manual safety is designed as ambidextrous lever safety and it allows to load and unload the weapon in safe mode.

Main components of the upper receiver are a housing, in which a locking ring is permanently fixed, and a Picatinny rail as interface to the rifle scope. Integrated in this scope mount rail is the rear part of the emergency sight, designed as factory zeroed flip-up sight. Into the above mentioned locking ring, the bolt locks by rotation; thus, receiver with locking ring, bolt and barrel are forming the breech of the rifle. The bolt assembly features mainly a body with handle for operation and carries extractor, ejector and firing pin. The bolt head shows three strong locking lugs for maximum strength and opens at a 60° angle.

The barrel is a one-piece construction of forged steel. A special barrel steel is used, providing at once best corrosion resistance and longevity. The barrel shows very distinctive flutings which reduce the weight of the stiff, heavy contoured barrel. With its chamber end, the barrel becomes screwed into the receiver and presses onto the locking ring. On the muzzle side, a highly efficient muzzle brake is fixed. The trigger is a so called double-stage trigger. It is designed in a way to allow an external adjustment without dismantling the trigger group. The trigger pull is adjustable as well as its path. In the large trigger guard, the magazine retainer is integrated. It is holding the magazine in two positions: one is fully inserted for magazine feeding, the other position is offering comfortable round-by-round manual feeding.

Around the central tube of the rifle scope, two rugged rings are tightened (one with Simrad adaptor). Those rings are attached to the mount base, showing a Picatinny interface to the rifles upper receiver. Scope and mount are clamped on the Brugger & Thomet APR-338 rifles Picatinny rail by the tension of two levers, allowing the operator to quickly remove the scope in case of failure or while cleaning or transporting. Detaching and attaching the scope repeatedly will not affect the zero. The scope itself is a model out of the well established Schmidt&Bender PMII line, featuring a unique reticle and a Double Turn elevation turret for maximum adjustment range. Basically, the muzzle brake reduces recoil by over 40%. Its rugged steel body also carries the front part of the emergency sight, the flip-up front sight. The more, its design provides the possibility to attach a suppressor directly on the muzzle brake, which therefore never has to be removed. The muzzle brake assembly includes a thread protector to protect the thread if no suppressor is mounted.
Operating parts are hand-machined from solid nickel-chrome-molybdenum steel, starting with a single homogenous block of metal. The stock is largely of aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, with a buttplate equipped with thick rubber recoil pad. The buttplate is adjustable for length of pull, height, and angle.

The stock also has a padded cheekpiece adjustable for height. The pistol grip, trigger guard and handguards are polymer; the trigger guard contains a trigger adjustable for pull weight, angle, and finger reach, and the pistol grip includes an adjustable handrest. The receiver is also built mostly of aircraft-quality aluminum alloy, with steel reinforcement. The folding bipod is of light alloy and is adjustable for height and cant, as well as containing a bubble level near the mount area. Barrels are of heavy cold hammer forged stainless steel and button-rifled; the length Truvelo lists as “average” is an incredible 30.1 inches.

Magnum versions also include a muzzle brake; standard calibers may have an optional flash suppressor, and if subsonic ammunition is available in the buyer’s preferred chambering, the barrel is threaded to accept a silencer or sound suppressor. There are no open sights on a “standard” SG1, but the SG-1 sniper rifle is normally equipped with a MIL-STD-1913 rail for scope/optic mounting. (If the buyer wants, he may also have his rifles delivered with some other type of mount).

Truvelo Armoury SG1 also makes more compact versions of these rifles, designed for counter-sniper work and urban warfare, with a secondary consideration for the rifle to be a more compact package more easily-carried by Airborne and Air Assault troops. These are called by Truvelo the Counter-Measure Sniper (CMS) rifles. They are of basically the same construction, but have shorter barrels (22.2 inches for the 7.62mm and .338 chamberings, and 29.1 inches for the .50-caliber version), side-folding skeletonized stocks, rubber recoil pads for the stock, and muzzle brakes which can be removed and replaced with silencers for use with subsonic ammunition (even the 7.62mm NATO version of the CMS has a muzzle brake).

For the most part, they are otherwise similar to the standard SG1 Sniper Rifle, just in a lighter, more-compact package. Let me emphasize that the statistics below are for what Truvelo calls an “average” SG-1, but Truvelo will build the SG-1 to virtually any configuration the buyer desires.

Truvelo calls the SG-1 a “high precision sniper rifle” with good reason, as it is one of the best sniper rifles the world doesn’t know about. Each SG1 Sniper is basically hand-made to order (and in fact, the statistics below are for what Truvelo calls an “average” SG1 sniper rifle if the word “average” really fits the SG-1).There are three standard chamberings, but Truvelo will build the SG-1 for virtually any caliber and ammunition the buyer desires. It is a very new rifle, which partially accounts for its rarity and lack of profile in the world; in addition to that, South Africa has a long-standing policy of not revealing its export customers and not confirming exactly what SANDF is using.

In addition, the PKS-07 telescopic collimator sight and the PKN-03 night vision scope of the AS Val may be used with the VSS. Backup iron sights are also available. No other scopes will fit on the VSS Vintorez Sniper mounts without a lot of modification or a special adapter.

The case for the VSS Sniper Rifle is 450mm wide and 140mm thick. The VSS Sniper was designed specifically for the assassination role; included with the cost of the weapon is a case big enough for the broken down rifle, a PSO-1-1 telescopic sight, an NPSU-3 image intensifier, and two 10-round magazines. (The image intensifier and the magazines are not included in the cost of the weapon below).

This VSS Vintorez Russian sniper rifle was developed in tandem with the AS Silent Assault Rifle, and is essentially the same weapon with a longer and heavier barrel. While the AS Rifle is designed for “general” special operations use by troops needing a silenced weapon, the VSS Sniper Rifle (more commonly called the Vintorez, meaning “thread cutter”) is meant for use as a sniper’s or assassin’s weapon. The VSS is also related to the MA Vikhr short assault rifle, though there are many differences between the Vikhr and the VSS and most parts will not interchange. The VSS was first issued for service in 1987, but not generally known about in the West until the mid-1990s.

Other than the slightly longer barrel, the VSS Vintorez uses a silencer optimized specifically for the SP-6 AP cartridge. The stock appears to be derived from that of the SVD, but is more rounded and compact, and has a ventilated recoil pad. Operation is by gas and with a closed bolt; the VSS is known for an exceptionally-smooth action that is quiet and interferes little with the sniper’s accuracy. The VSS has two selector switches; one takes the weapon on and off of safe, and the other allows for semiautomatic or automatic fire. The automatic fire capability of the AS has been retained and the VSS can also be employed as an assault rifle; however, prolonged use of automatic fire (according to some sources) may damage the silencer. The barrel is a mere 7.87 inches long, though the silencer appears to make this much longer. The VSS Vintorez Sniper is normally used with 10-round magazines, but can use any magazine designed for the VSS or AS rifles.
Like most Russian small arms, the scope mount is on the right
side of the receiver; this may mount a telescopic sight (normally a 4x
scope), but Russian night vision or laser aiming devices may also be
used. The VSK-94 Sniper also retains the iron sights of the 9A-91 rifle. The
selector is noted for being almost silent in operation. The VSK-94 Sniper Rifle can be carried in a case similar to that of the VSS, though slightly larger.

This is similar in appearance and function to the VSS Vintorez
(below); however, the VSK-94 is a later development, based on the 9A-91
light assault rifle and meant to be a lower-priced competitor to the
VSS. The VSK-94 also fires SP5 and SP6 ammunition, and has a fixed
skeletonized stock similar to that of the VSS. (The stock can be
detached if desired, but is not a folding stock, and the pistol grip is
part of the stock.) It retains the basic operation of the 9A-91 assault
rifle, and therefore is
capable of automatic fire. The VSK-94 has a longer barrel than the VSS
at 9.06 inches, and the entire weapon is also somewhat longer.
This SVU-AS sniper rifle was invented by the initiative of "Vimpel" ("The Pennon") special team and was accepted by all of the Russian special forces. This SVD replace also uses 7.62mm ammo. With 20-shots magazine it has an automatic mode (6 shots in burst). You can attach silencer to it. Excellent weapon.
